Groot Karoo
The Purest Night Skies
The Great Karoo is a vast semi-desert region of more than 400,000-sq-km stretching over the provinces of the Eastern, Northern and Western Cape. Karoo is a Khoisan word that means ‘dry, hard, thirst land’. This region has the purest night skies, its wide-angle horizons offers the most breath-taking dawn breaks and sunsets.
The principal towns are Graaff-Reinet, Beaufort West, and Aberdeen, and grains and fruit are the main crops. It is a place inhabited with hospitable and friendly people who have lived here for generations. The Great Karoo makes for a memorable road trip and you could travel about the towns and have a unique experience in each one.
