Klein Karoo
One of the Most Diverse Regions
A stop along South Africa’s Garden Route, the Klein (Little) Karoo is a valley that runs between coastal mountains and the Swartberg Range. The sunny, dry climate here is ideal for the area’s two major industries — wine making and ostrich farming. Oudtshoorn, known as the “Capital of the Klein Karoo” was the booming centre of a lucrative trade in ostrich feathers in the late 19th century.
The Klein Karoo is one of the most diverse wine regions in South-Africa. The climate is dry, thus its vineyards grows mostly in the fertile soil adjacent river banks. Travellers can explore the Cango Caves, the various ostrich farms, Meiringspoort Gorge at De Rust, or the wine route and the Swartberg Pass.
