The Highlands

Breath-taking Natural Beauty

The Mpumalanga Highlands Meander sits between the Cultural Heartland and the Panorama Route and includes the towns of Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Machadodorp and Waterval Boven. Mpumalanga contains evidence of human inhabitants going back to around a 100 000 years, and the first major kingdoms and mining empires beginning around 46 000 years ago. It is an area of breath-taking natural beauty and various historic towns.

This is a region perfect for both nature lovers and the adventurous at heart. You can enjoy rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing, or the local vibrant arts and crafts community. It’s been dubbed as South Africa’s ‘Trout Mecca’ and is home to South Africa’s only breeding community of black leopards.
